The political climate in West Bengal has taken a dramatic turn with the election battle for the Bhabanipur constituency intensifying. According to the latest data from the Election Commission of India (ECI), Suvendu Adhikari of the BJP has emerged as a formidable contender, leading narrowly against the incumbent Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after 16 rounds of counting.
With Adhikari securing 53,932 votes and Banerjee barely trailing at 53,369, the contest remains exceptionally close. Earlier, Banerjee had managed to close a significant 3,830-vote gap, but the political tide seems to have shifted once more in favour of the BJP, putting them ahead of the race.
The tension was palpable at the Bhowanipore counting centre as Mamata Banerjee left the venue amidst chants from BJP supporters demanding change. As the final rounds of counting are underway, political analysts are keenly watching to see if Banerjee can mount a comeback or if Adhikari will claim a decisive victory in this tight contest.
