Trump Backs Gas Tax Suspension Amid Rising Fuel Prices

President Donald Trump announced on Monday his support for reducing the 18.4-cent federal gasoline tax as fuel prices soar across the United States, resulting from ongoing tensions due to the Iran war. The suspension of this tax, however, requires Congress, which is controlled by Trump's Republican allies, to pass the necessary legislation.

With gasoline prices averaging $4.52 per gallon, the highest since 2022, discussions around the tax suspension have intensified, particularly after Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil route. While the proposed tax relief could bring temporary relief, Senate Majority Leader John Thune emphasized reopening the Strait to truly impact fuel costs.

The mounting fuel prices present a political challenge for Trump and Republicans as they face the upcoming midterm elections. Alongside the tax suspension, Trump has also introduced other measures to ease energy prices, including releasing crude from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
