Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma highlighted the state's untapped fish farming potential at the Mizoram Fish Farmers' Meet in Aizawl. Currently, only about 25% of the available 24,000 hectares suitable for pisciculture is developed, with fish ponds occupying approximately 6,000 hectares.
He noted major challenges such as limited pond numbers and inadequate storage facilities, affecting fish productivity per hectare. Lalduhoma called for enhancing productivity using existing ponds by adopting modern technologies and scientific farming practices, including optimal pond management and advanced feeding methods.
The government seeks to boost fish production through programs like the Blue Revolution and Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY). Initiatives like the 'Bana Kaih' scheme offer support for fish pond construction, with the rollout of PMMSY 2.0 anticipated. The government is open to viable proposals beyond current schemes to further support the sector.
