The Democratic primary for a Nebraska U.S. House seat is in deadlock between activist Denise Powell and state senator John Cavanaugh. With a narrow majority in the House, the district is crucial for Democrats aiming to overturn Republican seats. Progressive and moderate strategies face off in this tight race.
The Democratic primary in Nebraska for a U.S. House seat remains a tight race, with activist Denise Powell just ahead of state senator John Cavanaugh. This Omaha-based district represents one of the Democrats' best chances to capture a Republican-held seat in the critical 2026 elections.
With around 89% of votes counted, Powell holds 38.9% while Cavanaugh trails with 36.8%, as reported by the Associated Press. The victor will face Republican nominee Brinker Harding, who ran unopposed.
The district has leaned towards the Democrats recently, despite Nebraska's Republican preference in statewide contests. As incumbent Representative Don Bacon retires, this district becomes a key target for Democrats seeking to disrupt the Republican majority in the House.
