The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) is set to hold nationwide protests, criticizing the Centre's Minimum Support Price (MSP) for the 2026-27 Kharif season. The organization's main grievance is the government's refusal to implement the Swaminathan Commission's recommendation of setting the MSP at 50% above the comprehensive cost of cultivation.
The SKM argues that the current MSP, based on the A2+FL formula, undercuts prices farmers deserve by not considering the comprehensive costs, including land rental and interest on fixed capital. The discrepancies mean farmers, particularly those cultivating 20 crops, are estimated to lose nearly Rs 3 lakh crore due to inadequate MSP and weak procurement mechanisms.
The SKM also accuses the government of prioritizing corporate interests and surrendering to external pressures, including the World Trade Organization's policies. These allegations are exacerbated by the rising costs of agricultural inputs and increasing farmer suicides, leading to a heightened call for fairer MSP implementation and a comprehensive loan waiver.
