Zaporizhzhia On Edge: Nuclear Plant Shelled Again
The Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station in Ukraine was shelled for the second consecutive day, damaging facilities but not impacting operations. No injuries were reported, though accusations about safety risks continue amid ongoing conflicts. A Ukrainian drone also recently fell near the power units without detonating.
The Russian-installed management of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station announced that Ukrainian forces shelled part of the facility for two consecutive days, damaging a transport workshop. Despite the damage, operations were reportedly unaffected. The incident, shared via the Telegram messaging app, did not result in any injuries.
Russia's military took control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest with six reactors, shortly after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Both parties consistently blame each other for military actions that potentially jeopardize nuclear safety. Plant management confirmed on Saturday that a Ukrainian drone fell near the power units but did not detonate, allowing plant operations to continue.
The Zaporizhzhia facility has endured numerous drone strikes since the conflict's inception. Although the plant generates no electricity, it remains operational to ensure nuclear fuel cooling.
