A 16-year-old girl who allegedly attempted suicide on Thursday by threatening to jump from an apartment building was rescued by police, and fire and emergency services personnel, officials said.

The incident occurred at around 11.30 am when the girl climbed to the fifth floor of an apartment building in the NRI Layout area of Ramamurthynagar, they said.

Police suspect that certain issues involving her parents may have driven her to take such an extreme step.

However, the exact reason behind the suicide attempt is yet to be ascertained.

Panic spread in the area after the girl began screaming and said she would end her life. Residents who noticed her in the apartment building immediately alerted the police.

Following this, a rescue operation was launched by the police with assistance from fire department personnel.

''The girl was rescued safely and given first aid. She was referred to NIMHANS for counselling. Further investigation is underway,'' a senior police officer said.
