More than 100 decomposed carcasses of cattle, including several bovine animals, were found lying in the open at a municipal dumping yard in Jaisalmer, officials said on Monday.

The carcasses, which were scattered over nearly a one-kilometre radius at the Nagar Parishad dumping yard, had allegedly remained unattended for several days.

The foul smell emanating from the decomposing remains, especially in the intense summer heat, caused panic among residents, leading to complaints lodged with the administration.

Municipal Commissioner Lajpal Singh Sodha said there had been serious negligence by Goparam, the contractor responsible. As a result, his contract was terminated, and he was blacklisted.

''The contractor had been allotted space at the dumping yard for the disposal of dead animals. Typically, dead animals collected from the city are dried for a day or two before being buried in pits according to the disposal process. However, the contractor allowed the carcasses to accumulate for nearly 15 to 20 days over a large area,'' Sodha told PTI.

He said that after complaints from locals, a site inspection was conducted on Sunday, revealing that over 100 exposed and decomposing animals were present. A notice was subsequently issued to the contractor, and disposal was carried out using municipal resources.

The tender was cancelled on Monday, according to the municipal commissioner.

Sodha noted that deep pits were dug at the dumping yard, and all carcasses were buried and covered with soil to ensure safe disposal.
