In a bid to foster environmental conservation and sustainable development, the Delhi government, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, is collaborating with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on a new recycling initiative. Announced by the Chief Minister's office, this project will see special collection boxes for old clothes installed at ten key Metro stations across Delhi. The aim is to recycle these garments into practical products, effectively reducing textile waste.

Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating that textile waste is a rapidly escalating environmental issue. "The Delhi government remains committed to creating a clean, green, and environmentally responsible capital. This initiative promises to not only minimize waste but also bolster sustainable development through the scientific recycling of old clothes," she noted. The Metro stations selected for this initiative include Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase-I, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh, chosen based on evaluations by DMRC's Operations Department and their security team.

The project intends to raise public awareness about recycling and reusing clothing. According to Gupta, transparency and efficiency will be paramount as collected clothes will be categorized and distributed to NGOs and self-help groups for upcycling purposes. Recycled items such as bags and rugs will be produced, and dedicated spaces at selected Metro stations will showcase these products. Remaining garments will be channeled to recycling units to make yarn, fiber, and non-woven materials, ensuring minimal waste production. The DMRC's initiative has garnered interest from a company specializing in recycled yarn and fiber production, which has commenced site inspections in anticipation of installing the collection boxes. The collection sites will be branded under the Delhi Metro Ladies Welfare Organisation, and official agreements are in the final stages before the project's formal launch.
