Jharkhand Renames Clinics Amid Political Controversy

The Jharkhand government has ignited a political firestorm by renaming the Atal Mohalla Clinics. Initially established to improve healthcare in urban slums under the BJP regime, these clinics will now bear the name of Mother Teresa, per a cabinet decision led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren.

This move was met with criticism from the state's BJP, which perceived it as a slight against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a key figure in the creation of Jharkhand state. 'The state's soul and its history are disrespected,' said BJP spokesperson Ajay Shah.

In a whirlwind cabinet meeting, the state government's decisions spanned beyond healthcare; notable steps included the approval of the Jharkhand State University Bill, 2025, and the establishment of thousands of new teaching positions. Furthermore, adjustments to police recruitment rules and preparations for the Shravani Mela were addressed.
