The Haryana Human Rights Commission is probing a disturbing incident of alleged medical malpractice at Mandikhera Civil Hospital, which resulted in a newborn's arm being detached during childbirth. The Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the case, citing violations of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 21 of the Indian Constitution.
The incident, which surfaced through a media report, occurred on July 30 when a woman was admitted for delivery. Allegations suggest that the attending medical staff's negligence led to the newborn's limb being severed. Further claims indicate that the family, upon questioning, faced abusive behavior and was forcibly removed from the hospital ward. The newborn was then referred to Nalhar Hospital for further care.
A comprehensive report from the Nuh civil surgeon has been demanded by the Commission, outlining the circumstances of the delivery, the medical staff involved, and steps taken for the child's treatment. Additionally, explanations for the alleged misconduct towards the family have been requested. The next hearing is slated for August 26.
