Goa's healthcare sector is grappling with a challenging scenario as 78 patients eagerly await kidney transplants. Health Minister Vishwajit Rane informed the legislative assembly that current facilities can only cater to kidney transplants, with three hospitals registered under the SOTTO Goa programme.
Of those waiting, 62 are active cases while the remaining 16 are deemed inactive due to medical reasons. Since 2011, the Goa Medical College has spearheaded living donor kidney transplants, with a total of eight deceased and 49 living donations recorded.
Efforts to raise awareness about organ donation include campaigns and collaborations with NGOs. However, a lack of transplant infrastructure for other organs persists, and 26 patients have sadly passed away awaiting kidney transplants. Corneal transplants are also being conducted by designated hospitals.
