Ebola's Lethal Grip Tightens in Southern Congo

The World Health Organization revealed Thursday that the Ebola outbreak in southern Congo has taken a deadly toll, with 31 of 38 confirmed cases resulting in fatalities. This alarming increase in the death rate highlights the urgency of the situation.

Ebola cases have doubled since last week, jumping from 16 to 31 fatalities, signaling the rapid spread of the virus. More than 900 contacts have been identified, underscoring the need for swift action. Vaccination efforts began in the region on Sunday to curb the outbreak.

Dr. Patrick Otim from WHO Africa emphasized the crucial role of vaccinations, stating that over 500 healthcare workers and contacts have received the vaccine. However, logistical challenges, including transport and storage, have slowed the rollout. Additional vaccine batches are expected over the weekend to bolster immunization efforts.
