The Supreme Court on Monday demanded answers from the Centre regarding its adherence to the 2017 palliative care guidelines, issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Authorities have three weeks to present their findings to the court, highlighting the implementation status across states.

A bench composed of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta took up a petition that pushes for providing terminally ill patients with necessary palliative care within India's national health programme. Senior advocate Jayna Kothari emphasized the lack of compliance in her arguments, raising issues about state and district-level execution of the guidelines.

The court ordered the additional solicitor general and senior counsel for the Union of India to gather detailed information not only at the federal level but also collate data from state authorities. Responses to the initial plea filed last year are still awaited, with the Supreme Court expecting a thorough update on the matter by November 25.
