Hantavirus Crisis Unfolds on Cruise Ship in Atlantic

The World Health Organization has confirmed or identified as suspected cases of hantavirus affecting seven passengers aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in three deaths.
The initial fatality was a 70-year-old Dutch man who succumbed to respiratory distress after presenting symptoms like fever and headache. His death was followed by that of his 69-year-old wife, who died in Johannesburg's airport hospital during her journey back to the Netherlands. A British man, too, fell ill and was evacuated from Ascension Island to South Africa, where he remains hospitalized in intensive care.
Additionally, a German woman passed away on the ship, and three passengers with symptoms are being assessed by medical teams off the coast of Cape Verde. Efforts are ongoing to evaluate and control the outbreak, as the ship remains moored and under observation.
