A confirmed Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri province has prompted Africa's top health agency to issue an urgent call for a coordinated response. So far, 65 deaths have been reported among 246 suspected cases.
The outbreak primarily affects the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, with suspected cases also emerging in Bunia, the provincial capital. Initial genetic sequencing points to a non-Zaire strain of the virus, presenting additional challenges as existing treatments and vaccines are designed for the Zaire variant.
Amid a backdrop of regional instability due to militia clashes, health response efforts face significant obstacles. Population movement between affected areas and neighboring countries like Uganda and South Sudan further amplifies the risk of spreading the virus.
