The recent National Family Health Survey-6 has revealed a concerning upward trend in obesity and high blood sugar levels among Indian adults, pointing to an escalating burden of lifestyle-related diseases.

According to the survey, 30.7% of women aged 15-49 were found to be overweight or obese in 2023-24, up from 24% in the previous NFHS-5 conducted in 2019-21. For men in the same age group, this percentage rose from 22.9% to 27.3%.

The data also indicates a sharp rise in elevated blood sugar levels. Among women aged 15 and above, those with high blood sugar levels or on medication for the same increased from 13.5% in NFHS-5 to 17.8% in NFHS-6. The survey highlights regional variances, with places like Puducherry and Chandigarh showing the highest obesity rates among women.

The health ministry emphasized the importance of focusing on preventive healthcare and nutrition strategies to combat these emerging risks, including non-communicable diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular ailments. This alarm bell rings in an era of increasing concern over lifestyle diseases.
