The National Medical Commission (NMC) has introduced a proposal to extend the maximum duration for MBBS students to finalize their education back to 10 years, including their compulsory internship. This move seeks to reinstate policies amended in June 2023, when the timeline was shortened to nine years.
According to the draft amendment posted on the NMC's official site, stakeholders and the public are encouraged to share their opinions within a 30-day period. While stipulations limit students to four attempts for the initial professional examination, the 10-year timeframe would accommodate those experiencing academic or personal difficulties, offering more flexibility to complete their medical training.
This alignment with the 2021 Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) regulations anticipates benefiting students who face unforeseen challenges during the course of their studies. The final amendment will be formed post feedback assessment, emphasizing the commission's commitment to pragmatic educational policies.
