Amid growing global resonance for yoga, the High Commission of India in Nicosia and the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) hosted an event ahead of the 11th International Day of Yoga 2025, themed 'Yoga for One Earth, One Health'. Held at the UNFICYP Headquarters Hangar, the event underscored yoga's importance not only as a wellness practice but also as a peace and diplomacy bridge.

The event saw participation from prominent figures like the High Commissioner of India, Manish, and Acting Force Commander Colonel Patrick Andrew Allen, OBE, Chief of Staff. Major Dharmpal Singh of the Indian Army, stationed with UNFICYP, played an instrumental role in organizing the event, ensuring smooth communication and operational arrangements between the High Commission and UNFICYP.

The High Commissioner remarked, 'Yoga represents India's timeless gift to humanity--uniting body, mind, and spirit.' Its international acceptance as a promoter of physical well-being and mental harmony highlights yoga's significance even in high-pressure scenarios. The event sent a broader message: integrating yoga into peacekeeping fosters mental resilience, stress management, physical wellness, and inner balance—key for those deployed in conflict zones.

'Our personnel face unique physical and mental challenges,' Colonel Allen noted. Incorporating yoga into daily routines enhances moral strength and mission readiness. 'This collaboration is a beautiful blend of cultural diplomacy and global wellness—fostering peace from within,' added High Commissioner Manish.

UNFICYP members Lauren McAlister and Lt. Petra Vitazova praised the event, considering it a vital platform for peacekeepers from various backgrounds to connect through shared mindfulness and physical activity. They stressed the importance of such initiatives for improving mental clarity and team cohesion in demanding environments.

The event featured a live yoga demonstration by a certified instructor from the Professional Yoga Association (YPA) of Cyprus. Additionally, a commemorative publication for IDY 2025 was released by the High Commission, celebrating a decade of India's global yoga reach and its ancient and contemporary relevance.

The High Commission of India plans to host the Grand Finale Event for the International Day of Yoga 2025 at Limassol's Molos Deck, with strong support from Cypriot citizens and the Indian diaspora, buoyed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Cyprus. (ANI)
