In the face of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, West Asia expert and seasoned journalist Waiel Awwad has highlighted the significant role that India must play in promoting peace and stability in the region. Speaking to ANI, Awwad described India as a "natural extension" of West Asia, emphasizing the critical stakes India holds in the region, including food security, oil imports, and the welfare of its large diaspora.

With the potential threat of war affecting over 9 million Indians living in the Middle East, as well as India's substantial economic interests, Awwad urges New Delhi to engage in South-South cooperation and facilitate dialogue to avert further escalation. He stressed that India's leadership is crucial, not just for its own security, but for regional stability, advocating for strategic dialogue with all parties involved.

Amidst the complex geopolitical landscape, India maintains a strategic ambiguity in its approach, balancing ties with the US, Israel, and Arab countries. Awwad's comments come in the aftermath of US military operations targeting Iranian nuclear sites, underscoring the growing tensions. With a historical and economic bond with West Asia, India's foreign policy, as outlined by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar earlier this year, remains deeply intertwined with the region's dynamics.
