West Asia strategist Waiel Awwad on Monday weighed in on the recent American airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear facilities, emphasising the potential repercussions of heightened conflict. In an interview with ANI, Awwad warned that further escalation might jeopardize global peace and potentially destabilize the region, leading to catastrophic outcomes.

Awwad highlighted Iran's significant geopolitical role, describing it as an influential regional power. He suggested that the United States is acutely aware of Iran's capabilities and the far-reaching impacts of a full-scale confrontation, which likely informs their strategic decisions. Speaking to ANI, Awwad asserted, "America understands, despite its demonstrations of might, that Iran is geopolitically crucial and not a minor player. Escalating the war with Iran could be disastrous for the entire Gulf region."

Awwad also pointed out Iran's history of retaliating to attacks on its leadership, noting, "Following the airstrikes, Iran is unlikely to remain passive, and may be calculating a response." He opined that the US and Israel aim for regime change in Iran, using the nuclear issue as a premise. He critiqued the underlying motives being US control over regional oil and dominance over strategic trade routes like the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.

"The principal goal is regime change, with the nuclear program merely a facade," Awwad remarked, criticizing American attempts at manipulating regional stability to assert control over global trade. His comments were made as the US confirmed successful strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the operation, known as Operation Midnight Hammer, had targeted Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan sites.
