Protests have erupted in the Sost Port area of Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan, with both traders and local residents demanding an end to what they term 'unjust taxation' and systemic exploitation by federal authorities. According to WTV, the demonstrations began with calls for the repeal of income and sales tax regulations deemed unconstitutional and imposed without local representation.

Protest leaders reported that local officials threatened the use of deadly force to disperse the crowds if the blockade of Chinese cargo trucks continued. High-ranking district officials, including the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of Hunza, allegedly warned about potential violence. 'We were directly told, 'We will kill you and allow the Chinese trucks to pass,'' one protest leader claimed.

The demonstrators argue that taxes should not apply in a region not constitutionally recognized as part of Pakistan. They demand a 10% share of tax revenue from Arab trade for local development. Allegations of corruption and extortion by customs officials have further fueled unrest, with local police reportedly disheartened and refusing to act against protesters.

Despite the resource-rich nature of the region, residents face economic hardships, political marginalization, and inadequate public services. Protesters warn of escalating tensions if their demands remain unmet and highlight the dire socio-economic conditions that have spurred this rising dissent.
