In a critical diplomatic maneuver, US President Donald Trump's trusted envoy, Steve Witkoff, engaged in high-stakes talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday. The meeting, described by CNN as Trump's final attempt to avert the imposition of new sanctions, comes amid escalating tensions in Eastern Europe.

Despite the discussions, uncertainty looms over whether Putin can persuade Witkoff—and by extension, Trump—that he is serious about ending the conflict in Ukraine. Trump's skepticism was evident when he announced from the White House that sanctions decisions would follow the outcome of these negotiations, stating, "We'll see what happens."

Witkoff's visit coincides with increased US-NATO support for Ukraine, including potential new military aid. The diplomatic visit marks Witkoff's first to Russia in months, amid criticisms of his lack of experience and the absence of a US translator during previous meetings with Putin. Yet, as the deadline for a peace deal approaches, Trump warned of potential "secondary tariffs" on nations buying Russian energy, a move targeting allies like China and India.
