Foreign affairs expert Subhash Goyal has voiced strong criticism against US President Donald Trump's decision to levy an additional 25% tariff on India over its Russian oil purchases. He warned this move would strain trade relations and impact both Indian and American consumers adversely.

Goyal emphasized the historic ties between India and Russia, citing the necessity of Russian oil imports for India's energy security across agricultural and transportation sectors. Highlighting potential losses, he mentioned a reduction of $30-40 billion in Indian exports, severely impacting sectors like electronics and steel, despite the global nature of oil trade.

The expert also pointed out the significant reliance of American industries on Indian goods and services, particularly in technology. In response to the tariff, Goyal predicted that India might be pushed towards closer ties with Russia and China, diluting years of diplomatic efforts between the US and India, potentially affecting American tourism and trade with India.

Responding to this escalation, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs criticized the tariffs as "unfair" and "unjustified," pledging to safeguard national interests. The issue stems from Trump's Executive Order which argues India's oil imports from Russia threaten US national security, leading to increased tariffs set to affect nearly all Indian imports, potentially sparking a wider trade conflict.
