Nepal-India Pact on Legal Assistance to Boost Criminal Justice Cooperation

The agreement on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters, signed with India, was tabled in Nepal's House of Representatives on Tuesday. Law Minister Sobita Gautam presented this treaty during the assembly's session. The deal, sealed in February, aims to bridge legal cooperation between the two nations more effectively.

Minister Gautam explained that the primary objective is to simplify the investigation, prosecution, and other judicial processes linked to criminal charges between the countries through mutual legal support. "The absence of such an agreement has previously hindered us in crime investigation and the recovery of crime-related assets," she detailed.

Negotiated over several years, the treaty found its inception at a New Delhi meeting and underscores enhanced cooperation on criminal matters. Endorsed by the Cabinet on October 16, 2025, it addresses human trafficking, financial crimes, and terrorism, crucially facilitating legal coordination and diminishing existing barriers, stated Gautam.
