Public discontent is escalating in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir as the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) declares a territory-wide strike scheduled for June 9. They accuse the Pakistani government of continually betraying the region's people by failing to deliver on promises related to constitutional and electoral reforms. The JAAC has threatened expansive protests if their demands go unheeded by May 31.

The leaders of JAAC, frustrated by Pakistan's alleged delaying tactics, report increasing pressure from authorities in Islamabad to retract their protest call, fearing a larger anti-administration uprising. JAAC leaders assert repeated negotiations have been fruitless, stoking further dissatisfaction and plans for a significant strike and long march.

This protest call arises amid heightened public resentment over inflation, energy shortages, and lack of political representation in the region. Human rights activist Amjad Ayub Mirza highlights the severe economic conditions, including rising prices and unsatisfactory basic services. Allegations also abound that previous protests have been met with violence, raising fears of significant unrest in the days ahead.
