Unveiling the Shadows: Hungarian Spy Network Discovered in Ukraine
Ukraine's SBU has exposed a Hungarian-run spy network aiming to gather intelligence on Ukraine's defense systems. Two alleged agents, former Ukrainian military members, have been detained. The incident illuminates strained relations between Hungary and Ukraine despite Hungary’s EU and NATO membership amidst the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

The Ukrainian SBU security agency reported this Friday that it had dismantled a spy network orchestrated by Hungarian intelligence aiming to gather sensitive information on Ukraine's defense strategies.
According to an SBU statement, two suspected agents, allegedly directed by Hungarian military intelligence, have been detained. This marks the first documented instance of a Hungarian spy network operating against Kyiv's interests.
Hungary, a member of both the EU and NATO—alliances closely aligned with Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia—has yet to respond to requests for comments. Tensions between the two nations often surface, partly due to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's skeptical stance on Western military support for Ukraine, coupled with his maintained ties with Vladimir Putin. The SBU specified that the arrested suspects, both former Ukrainian military personnel, were recruited to relay data on Ukraine's air defense and military capabilities in the Transcarpathia region, bordering Hungary, via cash and specialized communication tools.
