In a significant move, the Assam government launched an eviction drive on Monday to clear encroachments by 667 families in Goalpara district. This operation, aimed at addressing land encroachment issues, began in Hasilabeel village under Balijana revenue circle at 7 am amid strict security deployment, as confirmed by officials.
Deputy Commissioner Khanindra Chaudhary stated that residents showed no resistance during the eviction. The drive targeted 45 per cent of the 1,555 bighas while leaving a water body untouched. Notices had been served earlier, but compliance was not achieved, resulting in the mobilization of around 20 bulldozers for demolition. Local schools are also set for demolition.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized continued efforts to reclaim encroached land, noting that previous drives have instilled fear of encroachment across districts. Many residents have evacuated voluntarily, carrying belongings with them, and have requested the district administration for alternative housing arrangements.
