In response to the ongoing communal tension in Himachal Pradesh's Sirmaur district, the local administration has extended prohibitory orders until June 26. The villages of Paonta Sahib area remain under restriction following a clash triggered by a Hindu-Muslim couple's elopement.
The District Magistrate Priyanka Verma, citing security concerns, announced the extension. According to the orders issued under Section 163 of the Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, gatherings of five or more people, possession of lethal weapons, and public demonstrations have been banned. These measures aim to prevent any escalation of violence.
The district police chief explained that despite previous efforts, the law and order situation is still volatile. Recent arrests and political statements have exacerbated the tensions. Police resorted to using force after instances of stone-pelting injured several people. Political figures, including BJP leaders, face allegations related to the conflict.
