Security forces have intensified their operations in Manipur, leading to the arrest of four militants associated with various banned groups, according to police reports on Saturday. Among them, an active member of NSCN (Niki Sumi) was captured in Kamranga village, Jiribam district, noted a senior officer.
This figure was reportedly engaged in kidnappings for ransom and extortion activities along NH-37, the officer added. Additionally, a member of the outlawed People's Liberation Army (PLA) was apprehended in Kakching Turel Wangma, Kakching district.
Heightened efforts followed ethnic violence that has claimed over 260 lives since May 2023, involving clashes between Meiteis and Kuki-Zo communities. In response to the unrest, central authorities imposed President's rule in February 2023, after the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh, placing the state assembly under suspended animation.
