A 29-year-old undertrial, Suraj Shankar Singh alias Virendra Mishra, made a dramatic attempt to end his life by slashing his neck in a moving police van. The incident unfolded on Thursday near the Aadharwadi signal in Kalyan city.

Mishra was being transferred from Kalyan Jail to Thane Central Jail when he began resisting his transfer. He quarrelled with the escort team, withdrawing a piece of a blade concealed in his mouth, and threatened to harm himself if not returned to Kalyan.

Despite efforts from the escort team to prevent the act, Mishra injured himself and was quickly hospitalized. An FIR was filed against him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita at the Khadakpada police station.
