Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar announced on Saturday a significant hike in pensions for seniors, widows, and disabled individuals. The decision comes as the state prepares for assembly elections.

Starting July, beneficiaries will receive Rs 1,100 monthly, an increment from the previous Rs 400, under various social security schemes. This increase will impact over 1.09 crore people, raising the state's annual pension expenditure from Rs 5,405.58 crore to approximately Rs 9,000 crore.

The initiative, pending cabinet approval, reflects the government's commitment to social welfare, noted Social Welfare Department Secretary Bandana Preyashi. Meanwhile, Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also announced a 3% reduction in the interest rate on loans for 'Jeevika Didi', benefiting women, elderly, and disabled individuals.
