In a recent development, two Manipur-based organizations have petitioned the Ministry of Tribal Affairs to excise the 'Any Kuki Tribes' category from the state's list of Scheduled Tribes. They assert that the category enables foreigners to unjustly claim indigenous rights and threatens local land and resources.

The memorandum submitted by the organizations, Thadou Inpi Manipur and Meitei Alliance, stresses that this demand aligns with the official position of the Government of Manipur. The state's cabinet decisions from October 2018 and January 2023 had formally recommended the deletion of the 'Any Kuki Tribes' category.

According to the petitioners, the 'Any Kuki Tribes' category lacks distinct language, culture, and geographical isolation, which are essential criteria for Scheduled Tribe recognition. They allege that its inclusion in 2003 was politically influenced and lacks transparency, leading to increased ethnic discord.
