The Delhi High Court is poised to deliver a crucial verdict on a plea for premature release submitted by Santosh Kumar Singh, who is currently serving a life sentence in connection with the 1996 rape and murder of law student Priyadarshini Mattoo.
Justice Sanjeev Narula had previously reserved judgment on Singh's plea on May 14. Singh's 2023 petition seeks to overturn the Delhi prisons' Sentence Review Board's decision rejecting his premature release, considered in their meeting on October 21, 2021.
Senior advocate Mohit Mathur, representing Singh, has contended that his client has exhibited satisfactory conduct during his 25 years of incarceration, inclusive of remission, and has shown significant reformation. The argument underlines Singh's potential as a reintegrated and useful societal member, further emphasizing his current status in open jail.
