In a decisive move, three leading Meitei civil-society groups from Manipur vocalized their demands to the Central government, insisting on upholding the territorial integrity of their northeastern state amidst ongoing ethnic violence.
A 19-member delegation, consisting of representatives from Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), All Manipur United Clubs' Organisation (AMUCO), and Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), engaged in discussions with Ministry of Home Affairs officials. The meetings highlighted the urgent need for unimpeded movement, framing it as a fundamental right crucial for restoring peace.
With blockades obstructing roads since clashes began in May 2023, the groups stressed on phased resettlement plans for the displaced, and advocated for a National Register of Citizens to tackle illegal immigration effectively.
