The Maharashtra state legislative council witnessed a significant development as Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat introduced bills on Friday to create separate commissions for Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) communities.

This move comes after the Maharashtra cabinet's approval last month, mirroring a similar initiative by the central government. The commissions are designed to tackle specific issues relevant to each community independently.

The Tribal Advisory Committee has backed the creation of an independent commission for tribals. The proposed structure includes diverse members from legal, social work, and law enforcement backgrounds to ensure comprehensive oversight and management. A deputy secretary level official will be tasked with administrative leadership as CEO.
