In a landmark initiative aimed at empowering frontline postal workers and modernizing the postal ecosystem, Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region, Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, convened a comprehensive interactive session with Postal and Sorting Assistants from across India. Held in New Delhi, this high-level engagement brought together representatives from all 23 postal circles, symbolizing the inclusive and consultative approach being adopted to reform the Department of Posts (DoP).
Listening to the Backbone of India Post
Postal Assistants and Sorting Assistants play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of India’s postal services—handling everything from customer transactions and government benefit delivery at post offices to managing complex mail sorting operations in Railway Mail Services, Air Mail units, and Transit Mail Offices.
In an unprecedented gesture of solidarity and transparency, the Union Minister listened to the views, concerns, and feedback of each participant. By doing so, he not only acknowledged the lived realities of frontline staff but also emphasized their role as co-creators of future reforms in the postal sector.
“Your insights are invaluable. I promise you that your feedback will shape our policy and operational roadmap,” the Minister assured.
Vision for India Post: From Service Department to Profit Centre
The central message of the session was clear—India Post is on the cusp of transformation. Minister Scindia laid out a bold vision to position India Post as a profit-oriented and self-sustaining logistics and service enterprise. This includes:
-
Strengthening key verticals: Mails, Parcels, International Mails, Savings Bank, Insurance, and Citizen-Centric Services
-
Driving integration and synergy among different services
-
Focusing on customer-centricity, innovation, and revenue generation
He called for interdepartmental coordination to ensure that India Post becomes a one-stop solution for a diverse range of customer needs—from financial inclusion to last-mile logistics.
“We are committed to making India Post a cutting-edge organisation. This transformation will be people-led and purpose-driven,” said Minister Scindia.
Modernization Through IT 2.0 and Digital Address Code
Minister Scindia highlighted the ongoing rollout of IT 2.0, a sweeping digital transformation initiative that aims to:
-
Digitize operational workflows
-
Enhance transparency and traceability in service delivery
-
Improve real-time customer interaction and service reliability
Additionally, he announced progress on the launch of Digital Address Code (DAC)—a unique, geo-tagged address identifier aimed at streamlining logistics, parcel delivery, and location verification in both urban and rural India. The DAC is expected to reduce inefficiencies in address identification and lay the foundation for next-generation smart logistics.
Embracing Change: The Role of Frontline Staff
The Minister urged Postal and Sorting Assistants to become active participants in the department’s digital journey. He stressed that their adoption of new tools, real-time feedback, and hands-on engagement with customers will be vital to the success of IT 2.0 and other reforms.
“You are the face of India Post to millions. Your willingness to adapt, learn, and lead will determine how far and fast we go,” he noted.
Departmental Culture: Unity, Growth, and Service
Beyond technological upgrades, Shri Scindia emphasized the need for cultural transformation within the Department of Posts. He advocated for:
-
Continuous learning and skill development
-
A spirit of teamwork and mutual support
-
Empathy and positivity in dealing with both internal colleagues and the public
“Let us become a source of strength for one another. If someone is lacking, let us lend our strength with unity, positivity and purpose,” he said.
Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa: A Renewed Commitment
The session concluded with the Union Minister expressing deep gratitude and admiration for the unwavering commitment of the Postal and Sorting Assistants, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and national emergencies when India Post played a critical role in essential deliveries and financial inclusion.
He encouraged them to continue embodying the spirit of the Department’s guiding motto, “Dak Sewa, Jan Sewa” (Postal Service, Public Service).
“Your service goes far beyond mail delivery. You carry the trust of a billion citizens,” he affirmed.
Looking Ahead: India Post as a National Logistics Powerhouse
With continued reforms, technological modernization, and workforce empowerment, the Department of Posts is poised to become:
-
A profit-generating, digitally enabled public logistics enterprise
-
A reliable partner in e-commerce and financial services
-
A lifeline for rural and remote India, ensuring last-mile access to government schemes and citizen services
As India charts its future in the digital economy, India Post is ready to transform from a legacy institution into a dynamic driver of national growth—powered by its people and propelled by purpose.
