Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar revealed the receipt of a removal notice for High Court Judge Yashwant Varma on Monday. This notice includes more than 50 signatures from Council of States members, initiating a potential judicial impeachment process.
The notice stems from an incident involving burnt currency notes found in Justice Varma's official residence. Varma was subsequently transferred to the Allahabad High Court. The removal motion falls under articles 217 (1B), 218, and 124, sub-article 4 of the Indian Constitution, as well as section 31B of the Judges Enquiry Act, 1968.
This follows an earlier motion against Justice Shekhar Yadav for allegedly delivering a hate speech. That motion faced issues due to a duplicate signature. Dhankhar is ensuring thorough verification of signatures in the current proceedings.
