Meghalaya High Court Challenges Aadhaar Exclusivity for Govt Benefits

The Meghalaya High Court ruled that Aadhaar cannot be the sole ID for government benefits. The court's interim order demands acceptance of alternative identification like PAN or voter ID. This decision followed a PIL against a state notification mandating Aadhaar. Further hearings will review relevant laws and court judgments.

The Meghalaya High Court declared on Monday that Aadhaar cannot be the only document required for identification to access government benefits. The court issued an interim order mandating that the administration must accept alternative IDs from those unable or unwilling to present an Aadhaar number.

A division bench consisting of Chief Justice IP Mukerji and Justice W Diengdoh clarified that other valid documents such as PAN cards, voter IDs, or passports should be allowed if Aadhaar is unavailable. The court stressed that not having an Aadhaar would not disqualify individuals from receiving benefits under schemes including educational scholarships for SC/ST students.

The decision was prompted by a public interest litigation filed by activist Greneth M Sangma, challenging a state notification making Aadhaar compulsory for accessing government benefits. The court will further deliberate the Aadhaar Act in detail on August 12, 2025, to decide on its implementation concerning government schemes.
