The Supreme Court on Tuesday requested responses from the Centre and all states on a Presidential reference regarding the imposition of timelines for processing bills passed by state assemblies.
Leading a five-judge Constitution bench, Chief Justice of India BR Gavai emphasized that the matter affects the entire nation, not just individual states. Responses are expected by next Tuesday, with hearings scheduled to commence by mid-August.
In May, President Droupadi Murmu leveraged Article 143(1) to ask the Supreme Court 14 significant questions about an April 8 ruling that set deadlines for governors and the President on state assembly bills. The questions focus on Articles 200 and 201, exploring the scope of executive powers in legislative affairs.
