In a landmark decision, Sri Lanka's parliamentary committee has deemed the suspended police chief, Deshabandu Tennakoon, guilty of misconduct and abuse of power, recommending his dismissal. Speaker of Parliament Jagath Wickremaratna revealed the committee's findings on Tuesday.
The comprehensive report, freshly delivered to Parliament, endorses Tennakoon's removal from the post of Inspector General of Police. Speaker Wickramaratna highlighted the unanimous committee decision concluding Tennakoon's guilt.
This unprecedented move makes Tennakoon the first police chief in the 159-year history to face impeachment proceedings, stemming from past accusations of custodial torture. Parliament will now deliberate on a vote for his official impeachment.
