Greek authorities have successfully apprehended Moldovan business magnate Vladimir Plahotniuc and ex-politician Constantin Tutu, who were wanted in connection with serious crimes ranging from money laundering to drug trafficking.

Plahotniuc was detained at Athens airport on Monday, following an Interpol notice stemming from his alleged involvement in a $1 billion bank fraud in Moldova from 2014 to 2015. Known colloquially as the 'theft of the century,' the scandal rattled Moldova's banking system.

Constantin Tutu, wanted by Russian forces for alleged drug trafficking, was also arrested during the operation, which was rooted in a confidential probe triggered by a tip-off. The duo, who resided in a luxury villa in Athens, had been evading capture by moving across 22 countries since 2019.
