In Kolkata, the CPI(M)-led Left Front orchestrated a prominent demonstration on Wednesday, spotlighting the alleged mistreatment of Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal in several states. They claim these workers face harassment, detention, and even deportation to Bangladesh, despite their status as Indian citizens.
Prominent figures, including CPI(M) West Bengal unit secretary Mohammed Salim, participated in the procession that spanned from Esplanade to Ramlila Park. The protest aimed to urge the state government to take significant measures to protect migrant workers' rights by engaging with both the central government and implicated states.
The protesters called for a special session of the West Bengal assembly to pass a resolution condemning the reported attacks. Amidst broader political tension, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a forthcoming Bengali solidarity movement, countering alleged linguistic assaults and challenging the Election Commission's authority over Bihar's electoral revisions.
