The Meghalaya government has taken action to tackle potential illegal immigration influxes due to eviction drives in neighboring Assam, a state official announced on Thursday. The order necessitates all deputy commissioners to remain vigilant and collaborate with the police and border security forces.
The Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Shakil P Ahamed, issued this directive amidst Assam's intensified evictions targeting encroachers in areas like Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Hojai, and Nagaon. Displaced individuals are suspected to include illegal immigrants.
In response, the Border Security Force (BSF) has ramped up its activities along the inter-state border. Recently, BSF personnel in Meghalaya detained several Bangladeshi nationals who entered and traveled without proper documentation.
