The Assam government is set to reclaim over 10,000 bighas of allegedly encroached land in Golaghat district, an operation expected to displace about 2,000 families. Officials disclosed that the eviction drive is scheduled to commence on Tuesday morning in the Rengma Reserve Forest, strategically located along the Assam-Nagaland border.
A senior Forest Department official assured that extensive land surveys have been conducted, revealing large-scale conversion of forest into agricultural land by encroachers. Notices were duly served, prompting evacuations from regions like Chilanijan, Kherbari, and Dayalpur, primarily by families from districts like Nagaon and Morigaon and belonging to a minority community.
Security measures are reinforced with Assam Police coordinating with CRPF, as the Nagaland government alerts its bordering districts to deter displaced individuals from crossing borders. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma noted that a significant number of encroachers had already vacated voluntarily, underscoring the state's commitment to reclaiming its lands.
