Historic Conviction: Former Colombian President Faces Justice
Former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe becomes the first ex-president convicted at trial for abuse of process and bribery. The case, involving witness tampering allegations and running over 13 years, is seen as a landmark decision. Uribe's supporters deem it persecution, but detractors see justice served.

In an unprecedented legal ruling, former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has been convicted of abuse of process and bribery, marking the first time a former president in Colombia has been convicted at trial. On Monday, Judge Sandra Liliana Heredia announced the verdict after a rigorous review of the 13-year-old case.
The decision, which can be appealed, is steeped in political contention, dividing national opinion. Uribe, aged 73, and his advocates argue that this is a politically motivated persecution. In contrast, critics feel it is a long-overdue verdict against a man once alleged to have connections with violent right-wing paramilitaries.
Each conviction could lead to a jail sentence of six to twelve years. Judge Heredia, who shared her marathon decision-reading session with the court, made it clear that the verdict stands as a testament to Colombian justice serving its citizens, unfazed by power.
