UN Court Denies Release of Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic

A U.N. war crimes court rejected Ratko Mladic's request for release on health grounds. The 83-year-old Bosnian Serb general is serving a life sentence for his role in the Bosnia war. His health is stable, and the court ruled his condition doesn't justify early release.

UN Court Denies Release of Bosnian Serb General Ratko Mladic

A United Nations war crimes tribunal on Tuesday turned down a plea from Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic, currently serving a life sentence, for a medical release to Serbia.

The tribunal noted that despite Mladic's delicate health, his condition was under control at the U.N. detention facility in The Hague. Some medical details of the former general, who suffers from cognitive impairments and has been hospitalized multiple times this year, have been kept confidential.

Relating to Mladic's nearing life's end, Graciela Gatti Santana, president of the court, affirmed that it didn't equate to a terminal illness that would warrant his release. Convicted of severe crimes, Mladic led the Bosnian Serb forces during the 1992-95 conflict.
