Sowa Rigpa Institute Expands, Bringing Traditional Healing to Arunachal Pradesh
The National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR) is set to open a healthcare facility in Arunachal Pradesh to promote this traditional Himalayan medical system. In its fifth year, the institute, guided by Ayush Ministry, has rapidly advanced in education and infrastructure, with plans for expansion and outreach.

The National Institute of Sowa Rigpa (NISR) is expanding its reach by establishing a healthcare facility in Arunachal Pradesh, as part of efforts to promote the traditional Himalayan medical system, Sowa Rigpa. Within just five years, NISR has launched a comprehensive educational program, now enrolling its fifth batch of undergraduate students.
Recognized by the Indian government, Sowa Rigpa is administered under the Ayush Ministry. NISR, announced by the prime minister in 2019 and operational since 2020, is advancing plans to open another campus in Sikkim. It conducts research and offers public health solutions tailored for the Himalayan region.
NISR's rapid progress includes the launch of its five-year undergraduate program and outreach initiatives like seminars and conferences. The institute has secured Rs 40 crore for infrastructure, aiming to complete construction within three to four years. Recruitment for a 49-member teaching and support staff is also underway.
