The Karnataka government's decision to possibly replace senior IPS officer Pronab Mohanty, the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the alleged mass burials in Dharmasthala, has become a focal point. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara mentioned that the government will make this decision based on legal considerations.
Mohanty, recently included in the list for Director General-rank officers to serve in the union government, may continue his role if allowed by law. Minister Parameshwara confirmed that if permissible, Mohanty would remain; otherwise, a new officer of similar rank will be appointed.
The allegations, involving claims of mass murder and sexual assault spanning two decades, were brought forth by a former sanitation worker, leading to the SIT's current exhumation phase. The investigation team, bolstered by 20 police personnel from Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada, is actively pursuing these grave accusations.
