The Taliban on Wednesday condemned neighboring countries, particularly Iran and Pakistan, for the massive expulsion of Afghans residing abroad. Both countries are accused of unjustly targeting Afghans under the guise of expelling illegal foreigners, drawing criticism for violating international and humanitarian norms.
Abdul Rahman Rashid, deputy minister for refugees and repatriation, highlighted the unprecedented scale of deportations, noting nearly 1.8 million Afghans have been forced back from Iran, alongside large numbers from Pakistan and Turkiye. Afghanistan is grappling with internal displacements due to severe natural disasters, further complicating the refugee crisis.
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation is actively seeking dialogue with host nations to develop legal solutions for Afghan asylum seekers. Humanitarian organizations have raised alarms over the strain these mass returns are putting on Afghanistan's already fragile support systems.
